Our highly trained and experienced staff of health care professionals include: doctors of veterinary medicine, an animal health technologist, a hospital director, hospital manager, technical assistants and receptionists.



 

Dr. Peter Claffey (D.V.M.)

Dr. Claffey is the senior veterinarian and owner of the Centre. He has enjoyed a lengthy career in the veterinary profession and special interest in orthopedics, endoscopy, laser surgery and all areas of traditional surgery.

Dr. Claffey grew up in the Edmonton area, graduating from Bonnie Doon High School in 1964. He then entered the University of Alberta for his pre-veterinarian education. After graduating from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 1974, he practiced in Edmonton for two years prior to opening the Millwoods Animal Clinic in 1976. In October 1995, Dr. Claffey relocated his practice to a modern, free-standing veterinary hospital in south Edmonton, the Animal Medical Centre.

Dr. Joe Tomkowicz (D.V.M.)

Dr. Tomkowicz has a keen interest in internal medicine and endocrinology.

Dr. Tomkowicz grew up in Manitoba, graduating from Joseph H. Kerr College in 1981. He obtained a bachelor of Science Honors degree from the University of Saskatchewan prior to entering veterinary school. He graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 1989, and joined our team that same year. His main interest is internal medicine, diet, cardiology.

Dr. Hanna Bishay (D.V.M.)

Dr. Bishay grew up in Egypt and graduated from Assuit University in 1979. He worked in Egypt for 15 years and after that, he decided to immigrate to Canada. He joined Atlantic Veterinary School in Charlottetown PEI to finish his board exam. After passing, he worked in Swift Current before moving to Alberta in 1999.

Dr. Bishay is interested in internal medicine and surgery. He is also interested in dealing with exotic animal cases (rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and hamsters).

Dr. Bishay is a member of the following associations:

Dr. Benetta Ayvaz-zadeh (D.V.M.)

Dr. Ayvaz-zadeh acts as the Hospital Director and attends to the daily business of running the animal hospital.

She graduated with a degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Tehran, Iran, in 1969 upon which she immediately received an internship in the Department of Small Animals at the West-Berlin University. In 1970 she was offered a scholarship and began her Ph.D. in Embryology at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine.

Moving with her husband to Edmonton in 1974, Benetta partnered with him to establish the Millwoods Animal Clinic. Then in 1995, the more spacious Animal Medical Centre - of which she designed the floor plan!


 
 

 

Karin Hallihan Office Manager

Born in Calgary, Karin moved to Edmonton in 2002 to attend the Animal Science program at the University of Alberta. Her cats Theodore Sebastian and Golden Retriever Tristan fill most of her free time with a little chaos and a lot of love. Karin joined Animal Medical Center as a receptionist in 2004.

Karin is in charge of many critical duties in every department such as, purchasing inventory, choosing and implementing computer soft ware, organizing in-hospital educational meetings by a variety of speakers, managing our volunteer program, diet consultations. She is also qualified to assist in every department when needed such as surgery, lab, and radiology. Karin has special interest in animal nutrition and behavior. She recently has developed interest in photography.


 

 

Amanda Miller Head Administrative Assistant

Amanda was born and raised in the small community of Hardisty South East of Edmonton. She graduated from NAIT's Animal Administrative Assistant program in 2006. After working in a mixed animal practice for two years, she returned to Edmonton in May 2008, and started working at the Animal Medical Centre July 2008. Amanda is now living on the south side of Edmonton, and currently has two domestic cats named Willow and Carl, and an albino Corn snake.


 

 

Jannah Kelley Veterinary Technician

Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Jannah came to Edmonton in April 2010 after graduating from the Veterinary Technology program at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. She has a keen interest in every area of vet medicine with special interests in venipuncture, dentistry, and anesthesia. She is in charge of running treatment and surgery and loves the freedom and responsibility that comes with it. Jannah has three furry friends of her own at home - Two dogs (JJ and Grif) and a kitten (Peyton Manning). When not at work, Jannah likes to spend her time going to the gym, eating sushi, and watching football (NFL of course).


 

 

Andre Poitras Technical Assistant

Born and raised in Edmonton Andre came to our center in August 2006. As Technical Assistant, André says the best part of his job is Learning something new every day". Andre assists everyone in each department enthusiastically with much care and drive. He lives on the south side of Edmonton with his Rottweiler Kobe. In his spare time likes going to the gym, cooking and walking his dog in the park. Andre is particularly interested in animal behavior.


 

 

Kelly Dalquist Technical Assistant

Born and raised in Edmonton Kelly joined the center in June 2008 as a Technical Assistant. Due to Kelly's keen interest in the welfare of all the hospitalized and boarding cases, she has since taken the position of the Hospital ward Manager. She lives on the Southside and shares her home with cats Peeve, Serenity, Xena, shepherd Shyla, and rabbit Geezer. Kelly is in the process of completing the final requirements in the Animal Health Technology degree from NAIT.
